Komodo Rock [5,6/10]
Italian's The Guestz (yes with a Z) hail from Rome, and play
a punk infused idea of rock n roll, that attempts to be both
catchy and reminiscent of 80's party rock. Does it succeed?
Well isn't that the real question we want to know right now?
The answer is kinda a double edged sword, it kinda does
work, but then, it kinda doesn't. Opening with 'Joanna Wants
Two Beers' the band show off their homage to early Hanoi
Rocks, and it just doesn't work for me. It sounds like a
poor excuse at being a punk band, a worse excuse for being a
rock n roll band, and god knows how many other analogies I
could pull out.
And that's where everything goes down hill.
Each of the following four tracks almost seems to try and
show a different side to the band, a different set of
influences, it's almost like we've got 5 bands on this
disc...
There's hope however, and that lies with the musicianship
that is very evident here. This might not be the be all and
end all for The Guestz, but for a band two years into their
career, it's not all doom and gloom. While I can't dig this
right now, I have hope that they might surprise me somewhere
down the line.
If the band can work out who they want to be, and what they
want to sound like, then maybe next time this review will be
rather more promising...
